Last week was a BUSY week for us here at DC Corporate Headshots. Congress will reconvein next week and a few of our regular clients wanted to have their sessions done before the larger group of new hires report to work in early September.

As I was reviewing the corporate headshot sessions we shot last week I noticed a nice trend…every session was for a woman. Politics, science, real estate, education, a few government agencies, and the healthcare field. All women. All women in business. Some of them loved the camera, some didn’t. I’m confident in one thing…the camera loved ALL of them.

I’m currently reading the book “Outliers: The Story of Success” by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell repeatedly mentions the “10,000-Hour Rule”, claiming that the key to success in any field is, to a large extent, a matter of practicing a specific task for a total of around 10,000 hours.

Aristotle is quoted as saying:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.

I reference those quotes from Outliers and Aristotle because I am committed to the old theory that “practice makes perfect”. That’s why I practice my craft even on the rare day that I don’t have a session scheduled. On those “off days” you’ll find me in the studio working on various lighting set-ups, evaluation different light modifiers, and pushing myself to get better. I’ll never be as good as I want to be because I don’t believe in perfection. I do believe in the pursuit of perfection…and to my clients that makes them extremely happy with the images we create and the service we provide.

How can I make statements like “the camera loved all of them”? Seriously? A-L-L of them?  That’s right. ALL of them (not just the 3 you see above, we have lots of sessions every week) because I’ve photographed enough faces (10,000+???) that I can quickly recognize an individuals strength (good side), and I can also relate to being on that side of the lens as I had my own headshots redone a few weeks ago by uber headshot photographer Peter Hurley. I can see where the light is going to fall on the face, how to turn you the right way to minimize the things you don’t like and maximize the things that you do like. I know which colors work for your eyes and hair and I;m not trying to make you look cute or glamorous (even though you might feel a little glam during the shoot).

My job…control the session…make you feel great about the images by bringing out the best in you…and create a confident and approachable image that POPS!

While we like to consider ourselves the best on the planet, there are also other fantastic photographers out there…so when I had the opportunity to attend a 2-Day workshop in New York presented by Peter Hurley…I blocked off some time on my calendar and headed to the city that never sleeps. Peter is one of the top portrait photographers in the country and has studios in New York, LA and Dallas. While I’m in NYC I have (2) major goals…1) go to B&H Photo and 2) learn a few new lighting techniques using. So as they say in the South…”Let’s get ‘er done”. See you next week.

I stepped away from a career as a Development Engineer for a leading plastics company in 2000 and haven’t looked back since. The reason? I LOVE cameras.
